History

1979 - Present
Susan Hayward was born and raised in Bath, England where she received her dance and teacher training from Celelia Lassman. Ms. Hayward immigrated to the United States in 1967. Her first American students were in San Bruno and she later taught for Mrs. Jackie Thomas in Half Moon Bay. In 1979, the Susan Hayward School of Dancing was born. The school has had several locations - the Odd Fellows Hall on Main Street, Half Moon Bay, the Blue Victorian(now brown) on 10th Street in Montara, a former saloon on Main Street in Montara and currently, the wonderful historic Montara Grammar School historic site on Sixth Street, where Ms. Hayward also makes her home.


1994 - 2008
LEIGH ANN KOELSCH LRAD AISTD MB NB former CO-DIRECTOR and ballet teacher, is a former student of the Susan Hayward School of Dancing and a graduate of the College of the Royal Academy of Dance Teacher Training Course in London, England. On completing the course, Mrs. Koelsch was awarded a Licentiate of the RAD (LRAD) She is an affiliate of the American Academy of Ballet, and also holds Associate teaching certificates with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing in the Modern Theatre and National Branches. Mrs. Koelsch returned from Great Britain to teach with Ms. Hayward in 1994. Mrs. Loelsch became co-director at SHSD from 2003- 2008 teaching dance and inspiring students in the art of dance.


1998 - Present
In 1998 Ms. Hayward’s daughter, Heidi Patterson joined the staff as director of the tap program, and became co-director of the school in 2009.

2005 - Present
Ms. Sade Warner, joined the staff in 2005 as an assistant ballet and jazz teacher, then in 2015 she became co-director of the ballet programs.

Mrs. Patterson and Ms. Warner are both former students and received their early teaching experience with Ms. Hayward.
