The Curriculum at The Susan Hayward School of Dancing consists of the following offerings...
♦ First Steps (Early Childhood Program) - for ages 2 1/2 to 5
♦ Classical Ballet - The Royal Academy of Dance Syllabus - for ages 5 and up
This program is designed for preschool aged children 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 years old. The structure of a classroom environment is introduced, and the children learn to take simple direction from the teacher. Children become familiar with, and master the use of parts of the body. Musicality and rhythm are taught through clapping, singing and improvising to music. Creative imagery and mime are used to liven the children’s responses to music and movement. Basic movement themes, such as jumping, running, spinning, and skipping are explored, and then developed towards an introduction to formal classical ballet steps.
Our school is affiliated with the Royal Academy of Dance in London, England; a world-wide teaching body that offers a carefully constructed graded syllabus to registered teachers. The Grades begin with Pre-Primary, for children at least 5 years old, and continue through Grade 8.
We also teach the Academy’s Vocational Graded Syllabus, which is geared towards the pre-professional student, aged eleven and up. Every other year, the Academy sends an examiner to our school, and students may choose to participate in examinations that complete their grade. These examinations provide a goal for the students, and give them a very rewarding sense of achievement at their completion. The exam results can help to serve as a yardstick for parents to measure their child’s improvement from year to year.
